In our last post, I quoted Dave Ramsey’s approach to reaching any goal by breaking it down to one strong day at a time. At
For example if your resolution this year is to improve your back pain, we would set up goals to calm the inflammation down by use of chiropractic, acupuncture, ice, etc. Next we would find the activity that is creating the pain and work to improve that. Often this may be a way that person sits, sleeps, or lifts. By installing small lifestyle changes, we can reduce the activity that is causing the inflammation. Third, we look to strengthen any areas that are weak. Often with low-back pain, the core musculature is needs to be strengthened. Exercises are given to strengthen these muscles.
Last we look to decrease the body’s sensitivity to pain. This most often occurs by improving the person’s nutrition. Eliminating sugar and processed foods, and increasing antioxidant intake are great ways to reduce the body’s systemic inflammation and decrease pain sensitivity.
Systemic inflammation can be measured by a specific blood test that evaluates C-reactive protein levels. C-reactive protein is a component that is made by the liver during times of stress and/or injury healing. When you ingest unhealthy foods, the liver will produce more C-reactive protein during the digestive processes. This has a wide range effect on the body, including increasing pain and slowing down healing rates. Luckily this process is easily reversible by improving one’s eating habits. But what happens when you don’t know what to eat or more likely don’t know how to apply good eating habits to your busy life?
That is why we created [LivFit]. Our hallmark three-week nutrition seminar is designed not just to teach the things to eat and not to eat, but to teach the application of a healthy lifestyle. We teach this in a format like Dave Ramsey suggested, “one day at a time, one step at a time.”
